THE SONORAN DESERT CANYON COLLECTION
The collection below celebrates the jagged, subtle beauty of a rocky desert canyon landscape. The textures of each piece alternate between smooth and angular, hopefully inviting you to pick it up, much like a stone might compel you to hold it in your hand.
Each piece starts out as a slab of five different colors of clay marbled together--one of which has a bit of crushed local canyon rock wedged into it. These slabs are shaped into mugs and allowed to be quirky and organic in form, with sculpted rock formations and tiny clay plants added to these rocks. The plants are inspired by the tenacious cacti rooted firmly in small pockets of soil on vertical canyon walls.
The handle is made from one piece of marbled clay that was carefully sculpted to resemble precariously stacked boulders. The colors and patterns in the clay are those one might find while examining rocks or plants while out exploring this landscape.
All mugs and tumblers are high fired to cone ten, with a homemade white glaze applied on the interior and rim. Gentle hand washing is recommended.
